Chris Hedges speech Union Square NYC - April 15th 2011

Chris Hedges addressing the crowd at the "This Is What Resistance Looks Like" rally in front of Bank of America at Union Square, NYC.
The phrase consent of the governed has been turned into a cruel joke. There is no way to vote against the interests of Goldman Sachs. Civil disobedience is the only tool we have left.

Slavoj Zizek: The Delusion of Green Capitalism

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2011/04/04/Slavoj_Zizek_Catastrophic_But_Not_Serious

Philosopher Slavoj Zizek argues environmentally conscious consumers are desperate for simple tasks they can perform to alleviate their guilt, so they do things like purchase overpriced organic produce. Zizek also highlights Starbucks, which he suggests attracts customers by appealing to their sense of altruism.

-----

The Committee on Globalization and Social Change will launch with a special lecture by philosopher and critic Slavoj Zizek who will speak on "The Situation Is Catastrophic, but Not Serious." This alleged message of the Austrian military headquarters during WWI renders perfectly our attitude towards the ongoing crisis: we are aware of the looming (ecological, social) catastrophes, but we somehow don't take them seriously. What ideology sustains such an attitude?

The Committee on Globalization and Social Change (CGSC) is an interdisciplinary working group composed of a core group of CUNY faculty interested in reflecting on globalization as an analytic category for understanding social change.

Slavoj Zizek, born 1949 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Senior Researcher at Birkbeck College, University of London, is a Hegelian Philosopher, Lacanian psychoanalyst, Christian atheist, Communist political activist, and he thinks these four features are four aspects of one and the same Cause. His latest publications are: in philosophy The Parallax View, in psychoanalysis How to Read Lacan, in theology The Monstrosity of Christ, and in politics Living at the End Times.

Dean Potter | Documentary (Part 1-5).flv

Dean Potter (born 18 January 1972, in the United States) is an American free climber, alpinist, BASE jumper, BASEliner, and highliner. He is noted for hard first ascents, free solo ascents, speed ascents and enchainments in Yosemite and Patagonia.

Free climbing and free soloing:
Potter has made several new routes and bold solo ascents in Patagonia.

Speed climbing:
In July 2006, he climbed The Reticent Wall, one of the hardest routes on El Capitan, in 34 hours and 57 minutes with Ammon McNeely and Ivo Ninov, shaving five days off the existing time.

Highlining and BASE jumping:
Potter is known for his exploits in highlining and BASE jumping. He was introduced to slacklining by Chongo, aka Charles Victor Tucker III, one of the first three people to highline across Lost Arrow Spire.

Delicate Arch climb:
Potter is infamous for climbing Delicate Arch, for which he lost his sponsorship from the Patagonia clothing company. "There wasn't any legal reason for me not to climb it," Potter said of Delicate Arch. "I didn't see any moral reason not to climb it. I didn't hurt it."
Potter said he would not climb Totem Pole, the spire in Monument Valley that Navajo imbue with religious significance. Delicate Arch, despite its prominence on Utah license plates, doesn't have the stature of that sacred Arizona tower, he said.
"I didn't see a reason why it's wrong, why we shouldn't mesh with nature," Potter said.
"At first Potter's handler in Patagonia spread the word of his climb by calling a press release to the Salt Lake Tribune. Public outrage was immediate, though, especially in Utah, where many see Delicate Arch as a symbol for the state's wild beauty."
Potter's Delicate Arch climb became the topic of the song Not All Roses by rapper Odub (Kris Hampton), released on the web on 2 April 2007. On 11 April 2007, Potter's lawyer sent Hampton a Cease and Desist letter advising him to halt all distribution of the song. Hampton subsequently released a follow-on song called Cease and Desist.

Notable Ascents:
- 2002 Supercanaleta, Cerro Fitz Roy, Patagonia. First solo of route.
- 2003 Concepcion 5.13+ (67m), Day Canyon, Moab, Utah. First Ascent.
- 2006 Heaven (5.12d/13a) Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley. First solo ascent.
- 2006 Southern Belle (V 5.12d), Half Dome, Yosemite Valley. Second ascent with Leo Houlding.

Harvey Fineberg: Are we ready for neo-evolution?

http://www.ted.com

Medical ethicist Harvey Fineberg shows us three paths forward for the ever-evolving human species: to stop evolving completely, to evolve naturally -- or to control the next steps of human evolution, using genetic modification, to make ourselves smarter, faster, better. Neo-evolution is within our grasp. What will we do with it?

Nicole Foss aka Stoneleigh - A Century of Challenges - Peak Oil & Economic Crisis

Nicole M. Foss is co-editor of The Automatic Earth, where she writes under the name Stoneleigh. She and her writing partner have been chronicling and interpreting the on-going credit crunch as the most pressing aspect of our current multi-faceted predicament. The site integrates finance, energy, environment, psychology, population and real politik in order to explain why we find ourselves in a state of crisis and what we can do about it. Prior to the establishment of TAE, she was editor of The Oil Drum Canada, where she wrote on peak oil and finance.

Most recently, Foss ran the Agri-Energy Producers' Association of Ontario, where she focused on farm-based biogas projects and grid connections for renewable energy. While living in the UK she was a Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, where she specialized in nuclear safety in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union, and conducted research into electricity policy at the EU level.

Her academic qualifications include a BSc in biology from Carleton University in Canada (where she focused primarily on neuroscience and psychology), a post-graduate diploma in air and water pollution control, an LLM in international law in development from the University of Warwick in the UK. She was granted the University Medal for the top science graduate in 1988 and the law school prize for the top law school graduate in 1997.

Foss believes that resource limits (peak oil) and the collapse of global Ponzi finance are a "perfect storm" of converging phenomena that threaten to trigger wealth destruction, social discontent, and global conflict. The consequences for unprepared individuals and families could be dire.

At her presentation, Foss will discuss the many converging factors that are contributing to the predicament we face today, and how individuals can build a "lifeboat" to cope with the difficult years ahead. She explains how our current financial system is an unsustainable credit bubble grounded in "Ponzi dynamics," or the logic of the pyramid scheme. She warns that most people are woefully unprepared to face the consequences of the devastating deflation that is now unfolding.

What makes this crisis different from past financial calamities?

Foss argues that this crisis has developed in the context of the fossil fuel age, an age which will prove to be a relatively brief period of human history. She says that we have already seen oil reach a global production peak, and other fossil fuels are not far behind; and while there is still plenty of fossil fuel in the ground, production will fall, meaning that there will be less and less energy available to power the economy at prices afford to pay.

She continues that societies have gone through boom and bust cycles before, examples include: the Tulip Mania, the South Sea Bubble and the "Real" Great Depression of the 1870s; but most people in the Western world today will face this crisis without the knowledge or means to provide the basics of their own survival. Our industrial system has nearly destroyed the individual capacity for self-reliance.

Foss argues that individuals and communities that take steps now to prepare stand a much better chance to thrive in a changing world.

This is part one of a keynote talk delivered to the 2010 International Conference on Sustainability: Energy, Economy, and Environment organized by Local Future nonprofit and directed by Aaron Wissner. "Les médias veulent des décroissants qui courent nus dans les bois !"
Arrêt sur images (8 avril 2011), avec Paul Ariès, Guillaume Duval et Xavier Timbeau

http://www.arretsurimages.net/contenu.php?id=3913

The Gary Null Show - 04/22/11

Download this episode (right click and save)

Today's guest is Dr. Vandana Shiva and she is an internationally renown environmental and social activist, and was formerly one of India’s top nuclear physicists. She has been credited as the principle founding leader of India’s ecological and ecofeminism movement. In 1982 Dr. Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology in New Delhi, which led to the creation of Navdanya (again, all “a”s are softly pronounced) – an organization dedicated to the restoration of organic farming across India and the preservation of indigenous knowledge and culture. She is also one of the leaders on the board of the International Forum on Globalization with Ralph Nader, Maude Barlow and Jerry Mander.

For several decades, Vandana has fought for changes in the globalized practices of agriculture and food. She has traveled the world speaking against biopiracy of indigenous foods and their medicinal properties by large agricultural and pharmaceutical corporations. Her activist efforts have created grassroots organizations throughout the developing world to counter genetic engineering of crops, as well as empower women throughout the third world.

Dr. Shiva has received numerous international awards, including the Alternative Nobel Prize (the Right Livelihood Award), the UNEP’s Global 500 Award and the UN’s Earth Day International Award.

Among her more important books are “Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability and Peace”, “Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed”, and her most recent “Soil Not Oil” Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis”.

Also, we David Korten, Naomi Klein and Jeffrey Smith during the second half of the program to participate in a panel discussion.

Dr. David Korten has become of our nation’s important visionary economists, historians and critics of free-market globalization in the progressive community. He is former professor of Harvard University’s School of Business. For several decades he has lived on different continents in international development projects , mostly in south and southeast asia. David is the founder of Yes Magazine and the Positive Futures Network. He has written many important books, and most recently “The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community” and “An Agenda for a New Economy.” His website is www.GreatTurning.org

Naomi Klein is an awarding winning journalist and author of the New York Times and international bestseller, “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism”, which has also been made into a documentary film. In a 2005 internet poll, Naomi was ranked 11th of the top global intellectuals living today and in a listing of top thinkers by Foreign Policy Magazine, was the highest ranked woman. She is a former Miliband Fellow at the London School of Economics and holds an honorary Doctor of Civil Law from the University of King’s College in Nova Scotia. Recently she has teamed up with environmental activist Bill McKibben, who has appeared on this program many times, to promote the 350.org to reduce carbon emissions.

Jeffrey Smith is one of our foremost experts on the health and environmental risks of genetically modified organisms, and is a leading watch-dog over corporate agricultural industry’s manipulation of GMO genetic science and public opinion. He is the founding director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, a research and corporate watch organization devoted to informing the public about the truth of GMO foods and technology.  His two  books -- “Seeds of Deception” and “Genetic Roulette” -- have become international best-sellers for  critiquing GMO science and the industry.

Earth Day Special: Vandana Shiva on India's Anti-Nuclear Protests

http://www.democracynow.org

On Earth Day, Democracy Now! interviews Vandana Shiva, prominent environmental leader, feminist and thinker from India. Shiva discussed the anti-nuclear movement in India, which has gained momentum over stopping the construction of a new six-reactor nuclear power station on the coastal plains of Jaitapur, India, in an area known for mango and cashew production. On Monday, Indian police opened fire on hundreds of protesters at a demonstration against the nuclear power plant, killed one person. More than 20 people were arrested. Shiva takes on British environmentalist George Monbiot, who recently discussed on Democracy Now! why he is in support of nuclear power, despite the ongoing crisis in Japan.

"Most civilizations of the world, for most of human history, have seen the world in terms of relatedness and connection," Shiva says. "And if there's one thing the rights of Mother Earth is waking us to, is we are all connected. And it's in that connection we can't have arrogant solutions, like nuclear is clean. Just because you don't see the radiation doesn't make it clean."

This is just an excerpt of an extended interview with Vandana Shiva and environmentalist Maude Barlow. Click here to watch the entire interview: http://www.democracynow.org/2011/4/22/earth_day_special_vandana_shiva_and

Offshore Banking and Tax Havens Have Become Heart of Global Economy

http://us.macmillan.com/treasureislands

http://www.democracynow.org/

As millions of Americans prepare to file their income taxes ahead of Monday’s deadline, we look at how corporations and the wealthy use offshore banks and tax havens to avoid paying taxes and other governmental regulations. "Tax havens have grown so fast in the era of globalization, since the 1970s, that they are now right at the heart of the global economy and are absolutely huge," says our guest, British journalist Nicholas Shaxson. "There are anywhere between $10 and $20 trillion sitting offshore at the moment. Half of world trade is processed in one way or another through tax havens." Shaxson is the author of the new book, Treasure Islands: Uncovering the Damage of Offshore Banking and Tax Havens.

Nobel Economist Joseph Stiglitz: Assault on Social Spending, Pro-Rich Tax Cuts Turning U.S. into Nation "Of the 1 Percent, by the 1 Percent, for the 1 Percent"

http://www.democracynow.org/

This week Republicans unveiled a budget proposal for 2012 that cuts more than $5.8 trillion in government spending over the next decade. The plan calls for sweeping changes to Medicaid and Medicare, while reducing the top corporate and individual tax rates to 25 percent. We speak to Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who addresses the growing class divide taking place in the United States and inequality in a new Vanity Fair article titled "Of the 1, by the 1, for the 1%." Stiglitz is a professor at Columbia University and author of numerous books, most recently Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy. "It’s not just that the people at the top are getting richer," Stiglitz says. "Actually, they’re gaining, and everybody else is decreasing... And right now, we are worse than Old Europe."
